Located west of the Continental Divide and nestled among the foothills of the Rocky Mountains the amish woodworking shop is just a healthy hike away from the Canadian border and surrounded by beautiful forests, filled with the Lodgepole pine that is known for it's strength and durability....this is the pine used in the making all of the rustic log furniture.
In harmony with our responsibility to respect and maintain the environment, woodsmen harvest the dead standing trees from the forest , without the use of heavy equipment. Some 'blow-downs' from the wind can also be salvaged as this is a very hardy pine. As good stewards , the 'wildlife' trees are left untouched.(these are the larger dead trees that provide food and shelter for birds and small wildlife)
Dried by the forces of nature, there is very little moisture in the logs when they are harvested. Once at the shop, the logs are all inspected and stored to finish drying out any moisture that may still be in the logs. The rustic quality of cracks , or checking, that happens as the moisture leaves the wood adds character and beauty to each piece of beautiful Montana Amish log furniture.
Old Fashioned draw knives are used to hand peel the bark from the logs using what is called a skip peel method. The 'skip-peel' procedure leaves just enough color from the inner bark to give the appearance of natural texture and color contrast. On the darker contrasting finished pieces that we call the 'Glacier Collection' items, more of the soft inner bark is left on the logs when they are peeled to create a unique look that is quickly becoming a customer favorite! One main assembly technique used in making the amish log furniture is mortise and tenon joinery, an age old technique that is known for it's strength in heirloom quality craftsmanship. Environmentally friendly.
On some of the larger pieces of furniture there is some assembly required, due to the size of the furniture... like the rustic log dining room tables, for instance... and the log beds.
The rustic pine log dressers or chest of drawers are made of solid laminated pine panels that are edge-glued to avoid any warping. VERY solid and sturdy pieces of furniture that will last for many years. The trim and drawer handles are hand-peeled logs..and the drawers are on heavy duty, easy glide sliders.
One of our most popular rustic log furniture items are the unique rustic log bar stools. You can get them with or without backs.. with swivels, or padded seats and now we even have laser designs that can be added to the backs for additional unique western appeal or complete the set with one of the various styles of pub tables.
